Overview

Explore some of the finest wine-producing regions in Italy as you travel from Piedmont’s charming villages to its artisan wineries.

The region of Piedmont is a quiet and picturesque area of Italy, nestled right at the top of the country beside France and Switzerland. The scenic backdrop of the Alps gives the region its name – Piedmont literally translates to ‘at the foot of the mountain’ – and provides stunning views as you travel between its small, rural hamlets, sampling the finest Italian cuisine and visiting the many wineries that the region is so famous for.

Begin your journey at the beautiful Lake Maggiore; a stunning location that is known for the Baroque palaces and vibrant architecture that populate the Borromean islands, before travelling further into Piedmont to discover the wine-making history of the region. Whether you are a fan of the iconic Nebbiolo wines or are looking to try the products of more independent wineries from places such as Roero and Langhe, Piedmont is full of new flavours and experiences to discover.

This tour can be added onto your existing trip, or we can personalise it further by adding more days to your itinerary that suit your own individual interests. Whilst not fully escorted, you will have private guides meet you at your hotel for the days of sightseeing on this tour, your transfers between locations will be private, and local assistance will be on hand for the entirety of your trip.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Arrive independently at the beautiful destination of Stresa in Lake Maggiore, and stay overnight in one of the boutique hotels that line its shores.

DAY 2: LAKE MAGGIORE

After a delicious breakfast, start the day by meeting your personal guide at the Stresa Pier beside the lake, and enjoy a boat trip to the scenic islands of Isola Pescatori and Isola Bella. Part of the Borromean islands, these two stunning locations feature sweeping views of Lake Maggiore’s shores and the incredible forests that cover the hills down to the water. You can spot the popular resort towns that surround the lake from the islands as well, including Verbania, Cannero Riviera, Cannobio, Stresa and Baveno.

The Borromean islands themselves are situated right in the middle of Lake Maggiore, home to a magical mix of natural beauty and art. Isola Bella features a stunning Baroque palace and huge, elaborate garden, whilst Isola Pescatori has a rustic village made up of colourful buildings that carry a particular rural charm. The journey to both of these islands will offer a perfect chance to appreciate the unique shoreline of Lake Maggiore from the water, and take in its historic buildings and gorgeous landscape.

You will return to your hotel in the evening and spend another night in Lake Maggiore.

DAY 3: ASTI AND MONFERRATO

After breakfast in your hotel, a private driver will meet you for a transfer from Stresa to Alba. This journey includes a stop in the Monferrato villages for independent exploration of the area, taking in the incredible surrounding countryside and ancient castles and houses. The architecture and vineyards are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their history and contribution to Italian wine-making across the country.

Your next stop will be the town of Asti, known for the famous Palio horse racing event that has been running since the 13th century. This charming location is full of sightseeing spots, including the gothic Cathedral di Asti Santa Maria, historic palaces and quaint churches and towers.

Before reaching your final destination of Alba you will be treated to your first wine-tasting experience of this trip at an established estate, featuring a detailed introduction to the history and flavour of Monferrato’s wine. You will reach Alba by the evening and spend the night in the town.

DAY 4: LANGHE AND ROERO

The fourth day of this trip is spent with a private driver transporting you from the village of Vergne to the medieval town of La Morra and then to the village of Barolo, home to a number of world-famous vineyards. This route takes you through the beautiful Langhe and Roero region, and you can admire the hills, cliffside villages and sprawling vineyards that cover the landscape as you travel.

The real highlight of today is the incredible variety of food and wine that you will be able to sample wherever you visit. The area is home to an incredibly high standard of cuisine that you can enjoy whilst surrounded by stunning scenery; the ultimate experience of fine Italian dining.

Your second wine-tasting of the trip takes place when you return to Alba, and will be another personalised experience with an expert who will guide you through the tasting process and answer any question you may have about the region and its vineyards.

DAY 5: DEPARTURE

Depart from Alba independently to either continue your travels or make your way home.
