Bologna is a foodie paradise. The city is where the slow food movement began and the birthplace of Italian cuisine. The city is famous for Bolognese sauce where it is traditionally served with hand made tagliatelle pasta. The winding streets behind the Basilica of San Petronio contain some of the best food shops in the world as well as fresh fruits, vegetables, the finest meats and cheeses all from local suppliers and of the highest quality. Your private guide will introduce you to the city by way of walking and tasting. You will also get to see some of the sites of the city and learn about Bologna’s historic past and its interesting present.  This is a private walking tour which can be added to any itinerary. Your guide will meet you in the main square to start your tour of the city. Your first stop is the impressive Piazza Maggiore where you will get to see the inside of the Basilica of San Petronio; the world’s 10th largest church, which got its name from Bologna’s patron Saint Petronius in 431 A.D.  You will marvel at the interior of the church which is adorned with amazing frescos and paintings. You will get a chance to see an ancient calendar that is read by a dot the sun casts along the floor.

You will then be taken to see the university of Bologna which dates to the 11th century and is still a successful school today. You will get a chance to see one of the most interesting rooms of the ancient medical school where students learned anatomy. The Anatomical Theatre of the Archiginnasio is where autopsies were performed in a class like setting; quite interesting.

Your guide will introduce you to the halls of the university where the walls and ceilings and walls are adorned with art and sculptures honoring the many faculty and famous doctors who once taught at the school. You will be taken to see the library which is a massive space with thousands of books, amazing architecture and beautiful works of art.

After you enjoy some of Bologna’s ancient past, now you will be taken to see its present which focuses on the culture of food and fine wine. Your guide will take you along the winding streets to view the fresh fruits and vegetable stands that are on almost every corner of the old part of the city. You will be able to taste the 3 Kings of Bologna, Prosciutto, Balsamic Vinegar and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese; are you ready? Let’s go!

Bologna is known for its cured meats. Prosciutto is known around the world and you can find it in almost every eatery you come across; but if you are lucky you will be able to taste the king of cured meats; Culatello which is so buttery and enjoyable you will be asking for more and more.

Let’s not forget the cheeses of the areas surrounding Bologna. The famous Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino Romano are the most famous and you will get a chance to sample them with a glass of local wine. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
